Critique on School Segregation

My stand on School Segregation in modern day USA. Also my opener for a debate on the same subject.


The 14th amendment states “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” To make sense of what has been said we must first define relevant terms to this debate, and the two key terms that need to be defined are “liberty” and “equal protection of the laws”. Liberty as defined by the 1793 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizens states that “Liberty is the power which man has to do everything which does not harm the rights of others.” “Equal protection of the laws” can also be translated as stated in the same 1793 constitution “Equality consists in the fact that the law is the same for all, whether it protects or punishes”. With that being said, segregations in schools are unconstitutional.

According to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals “Classifications of citizens solely on the basis of race are by their very nature odious to a free people whose institutions are founded upon the doctrine of equality and that the use of race threatens to stigmatize individuals by reason of their membership in a racial group and to incite racial hostility.” Furthermore, according to empirical studies done by the National Education Association stated that “closing the door on racial diversity in the schools, we open the door to further racial prejudice and discrimination by perpetuating the racial isolation that breeds such prejudice and discrimination” and thus racial segregation in schools creates hostile situations between races.

According to social scientists, that has concluded that schools with racial diversity have students with better creative problem solving because of the interactions of all the students. And thus if you segregate schools, you will be taking away important cognitive skills that children learn at a young age.

Another detriment made by segregations in schools is also one of the more profound problems that should be taken a serious look at before considering re-implementing segregation laws. For a democracy to truly work and society to be kept in order; the people in that society have to work together. In Fiji, the island is racially segregated between the local Fijians and the foreign Indians. Because of this, the politics also reflect this segregation, parties in Fiji are based on race, this heavily threatens democracy, because political parties are supposed to represent policies and ideologies, not race, so when one party in Fiji wins, it means that one race has won over the other (Margaret Palmer). With that being said, According to studies done by the NEA “Adults who went to racially diverse schools are more likely to live in desegregated neighborhoods, have children who attend desegregated schools, and have close friends of the other race than do adults who went to segregated schools”. So, according to empirical evidence, segregating schools, will keep races from interacting from each other; thus segregating schools is a threat to democracy.

Alice in Wonderland or was it NORTH KOREA?: Soundoff!

Plot: A girl falls down a hole and nothing makes sense. Then again, I'm pretty sure everyone already has an idea on the plot.

Soundoff Review: Every time a movie is remade or the idea is remade, I ask myself, is it really necessary? What makes it better or any different from the original? To me re-doing a movie is a very hard feat to do, you can either do it disastrously, exactly replicate it, or do it better even.

Let's make an analogy, let's pretend that movies are like a painting and when someone makes a new movie they use a new canvas and start from scratch. What Tim Burton does is get the original Mona Lisa and traces over it in a subway and paints it in his studio doing drugs, most likely heroine, and reading the Communist Manifesto.

My main complaint of Tim Burton's cover is that it was extremely predictable and not colorful enough, and even had Political implications in it.

We know what's gonna happen next, then why are we watching it if your not going to change it?

You have a whole slew of characters to work with and they are extremely colorful, how come they didn't come off as colorful or awesome as I thought they would?

Another thing, the political implications were quite blatant.

You can tell Tim Burton has a very western political thought, come on, a small person who in the end conquered great things. Sounds extremely western to me. We can also look at Alice as a lone Caucasian going to North Korea accidentally and everyone in North Korea (Red Kingdom) wanting to kill her save for a few rebels (Mad Hater and comp) who help her.

Also one more thing, this is a blatant attack towards feminism. According to Tim Burton, the Red Kingdom and White Kingdom is exactly what would happened if females had dictator unitarian monarchical powers. One queen is kind and the other is extremely violent which shows the bi-polar nature of women which Tim Burton exploits throughout the movie to create two rival nations against each other based on female ideology, in this case feminism.

Conclusion: The movie went by way too fast and felt rushed at lots of points. Tim Burton had an extremely good cast to work with, however, he decided not to, which created a cover that didn't feel like the director of the amazing "Big Fish". Alice in Underland (North Korea) is average 2.5/5

Shutter Island the review!

Summery: Watching Shutter Island is like eating an ice cream cake. Some parts are just better than others while the whole is satisfying.

Plot: Two US Marshals are sent to an island for a mission. On this island is a mental institution where they try to help the prisoners I mean ahem, the "patients" get over what is making them sick. US Marshals Teddy Daniels and Chuck are sent to investigate the disappearance of a patient in the mental hospital. However, this is just the backdrop to a even deeper story full of conspiracies/hallucinations/memories/and the oh so great twists.

Intro: When you eat an ice cream cake we all know that the best part about it is the ice cream, however, it wouldn't be ice cream cake if there was no ice cream, hence ice cream cake to be truly satisfying needs to have ice cream. Shutter Island is like ice cream cake. There are parts the movie excels in that makes it truly avant garde and some other knacks that somewhat hinder the movie from being excellent. In each section I shall reveal the pros and cons.

Music Score: The orchestral score is actually some what kindergarten in construction. The music score during the beginning is extremely distractive actually and does not create the mood that it was trying to go for which was a haunting and moody piece. It was blared really loud and made up of simple instrumentation and did nothing but distract/annoy watchers.

This is where it gets tricky, this same piece of music is played in during parts of the movie when things get moody or try to be "scary" and for the most parts it works better than it did initially.

The other music scores where placed way better in the movie and did not distract rather did what they were supposed to, which was to heighten the mood during the scene. Mostly during the hallucinations and the many revelations that Teddy Daniels have, and it's fricken awesome.

Camera: I must admit the camera angles were a great bane to the movie. Often panning around quite spasmodically. Like as if each character had their own camera and when they spoke a line it would switch to the automatically. At some parts too, it felt as if I was watching someone play Resident Evil 1, as the cameras sometimes shifted in weird angles when the characters move around.

That being said, the camera angles were the most disappointing part of the movie, however, it wasn't bad enough that it hindered the movie from being enjoyable, especially during the more avant garde scenes which were handled perfectly actually.

Scenery/Character designs: The decade this movie took place in was during the 1950s and was it portrayed quite well. You get your smug as heck police officers, the suave detectives, the nurses, the huge amount of smoking, the authentic 1950s props, the amazing World War II flashbacks, it has it all. Currently I am playing Bioshock 2 and I must admit that watching Shutter Island reminded me of playing Bioshock 2 in scenery and what the character designs of Bioshock was striving for, which was basically the mutant versions of characters from Shutter Island. Each character is extremely colorful, and has a mind of their own and extremely convincing, and when I mean convincing I truly do! You yourself as a watcher will get lost in "their" world, which I know I have.

Story: The backdrop like I mentioned during the plot leads to an extremely open ended movie which is awesome. Movies like these tend to have a predictability factor, however you get so involved that some parts take you by surprise. As you watch the movie your logic WILL FAIL YOU, this is not a light statement too.

The best parts of the story are the more avant garde parts that occur during hallucinations/remembrances/etc. and do these parts deliver on awesome. I do not want to spoil any of them, but these parts are the ice cream of the ice cream cake, if you know what I mean ;D But all I will say about them is that they are extremely colorful/memorable/crucial to the story/and awesome. My only complaint is that there are not enough parts like this, and when you get back to reality or "think" you are you start to miss the made up world D:

Conclusion: I heard this movie had mixed reviews, but do not let detractors of this movie fool you! Shove aside any formed biases against this movie and let it work to your advantage. Do yourself a favor and actually check this movie out before you hate 3.6/5

a somewhat normal day at work

This is a generalization of a day that I work.

I was awaken when my cell phone rang, and I realized that it wasn't my alarm but my ring tone going off. When I looked who was calling it was my work place. When I answered they asked me if I called last night which I did, and I even told them that I was to work the night shift. They asked me then if I could do the morning shift, knowing me, I much rather work the morning. So I agreed to do so, as long as I can get there at 11AM, which was pretty cool. So I got ready and went off to work as usual. Like usual, my mother droped me off, I was hoping for the mall so that my mother could drop me off there instead of having to beg my workplace for a ride to GPO.

Today, I was at the mall. So my mom dropped me off in the usual spot near coldstone (irony) and so I began. We started off pretty slow. Here's the bus schedule today so you can see what I see.

Somewhat usual/normal schedule today. All awesome people with unique personalities looolcat. Anyway's today was weird, cause even though the drivers didn't drop a lot of customers, it felt like I was sending back a lot of people to their hotels.

Unique Experiance

Every time I work there is usually a few unique things that happen that makes my day more memorable. This is most likely of interest to me, so you most likely may think it's not all that special

#1: This one couple asked me about "corridos misaki" which most of us know as "Two Lovers Point", he asked me how to get there so I told him that our buses don't travel there so you have to take the red shuttle to it. I then gave them directions on the right exit so they can go there. An hour or two later they came back, I asked them what they thought about two lovers point and he told me that the bus schedule to go there is every hour and a half so they decided to go shopping around the mall instead. I took a picture with the guy and I took a picture for them in front of the mall. I wished I did it better.

#2: Harold/Albertson/??? came by to visit me in my work. It was quite hallarious actually, the japanese family in front of us were wondering what they were doing. I let Harold test drive my job and the family was practically laughing. As they were leaving Harold asked me to tell the girl that she was cute and so I did. She was happy but I felt bad cause she had a sister that was pretty too, but I can tell that she was disappoint.

#3: There were these two Japanese girls that I met near the middle half of my day and one was a 29 year old nutritionist and the other was a 32 year old friend. The nutritionist spoke extremely good English which I complemented her on. She told me that she learned it while she was in college in Canada. That was pretty cool. We talked for a while and I can tell that she really digged me ;D she was super pretty too. She said that she was only here for TWO fricken days! They arrived like 12 AM this morning actually and is leaving tommorow night. She said she was sad cause they wanted to stay longer and spent a lot of money just to go here. I wished I knew her name.

#4: Just when I was about to go leave, there were these two japanese girls I talked to who were going to GPO, I swore they were 15 or so, and when I realized that they were by themselves I asked them how old they were and they were fricken 22 and 19!!!! WHAT!!! I seriously want to move to Japan and get a girl there ;~; There were students at this one University that I swore was called Sekai University or something like that. The 22 year old was an English major, her English was good, and she was hot. The 19 year old was a Law major, I didn't really here her speak but she was cute too, I don't think she knew English well.

#5: One of my co-workers Keoni found a bag full of medicine today. IDK, this was interesting cause we had no idea what kind they were. I wrote down some of the English letterings which two had. One was called Loxomarin which I googled and found out was a sort of migrain relief and Cefzon which was like an antibiotic.

Why "Avatar "wasn't all that good.

Summary: Not worth the hyperbolic praise I keep hearing about.

Story: Set in the future where mankind invades a alien planet for a very valuable mineral worth millions. Our main hero Jake Sully is sent out to use an "avatar" of a native alien of a planet so that he must learn how it is like to be a "Na'vi" so that one day he will tell them that they are going to be invaded. Jake then becomes attached to his avatar life and then has to decide whether or not to care for the Na'vi.

Is the storyline good?


Not quite, to me it seemed like an "Americans are bastards but everyone else are good guys" type of movies. It is quite comparable to Pocahontas when the Invaders think they are the good guys and that the natives are savages. The movie also has blatant environmentalist concerns, come on, save the land rather than let them gather/destroy natural resources? please, I don't need any more tree huger movie.

You can tell this movie has some serious racist issues, if you made the "Na'vi" any other color than blue, then you would have the whole African community up on you.

The antagonists in this movie are your stereotypical testosterone fueled knucklehead who doesn't know how to get what they want without using deadly force. Sure, they had to get the materials from under the tree, but did they have to blow up the mother tree? Have fun cleaning up that mess to get what's under it. It seems like they're solution to every problem is to blow it up. I mean people like the antagonist of Avatar just don't exist. If they did, then the middle east would be a giant crater by now. You would have to be incredibly retarded to be like the bad guy of this movie.

How about the character/environment design?

The na'vi like I mentioned earlier are pretty much a minority race made blue and in CG, mostly resembling Africans. The language of the na'vi also greatly resembles Swahili.

As for the creature designs, most of them resembled prehistoric creatures such as triceratops, pterodactyls, etc. Others look like animals we have today but more retarded/ferocious (savage) like dogs, horses, etc. One creature that always bugged me was the one that looked like a big lizard and then when a predator (presumably) would go near it, it would turn into a mini helicopter and just float around, in hopes to scare the predator away. Of course they designed it just to look pretty, but for functioning purpose, I feel sorry for the creature, I really doubt the predators of that forest would be stopped by that display.

The whole planet, pretty much looks like Africa and that's about it, oh but wait, all in CG.

Sure the movie was pretty but if you think about it, the whole movie was most likely all done through green screens and computers.

How about the orchestral score?

It was pretty decent, but came on way too often. I mean in Left for Dead, the orchestral music comes in at the right time but in Avatar, some intense orchestral score would start playing even when something small happened (see first horse training scene for example). To be outdone musically by a videogame is downright ridiculous.

Was 3D worth it?

Okay, so I was pretty impressed with the 3D for the first 10 minutes of the movie cause some things actually did look like it was coming out realistically. After that, things seriously meshed and I could have sworn my glasses were broken.

tl;dr

I must admit that this movie was really pretty but the hamfisted storyline makes it unbelievably average. Trust me, if I would want to watch a movie with environmentalist undertones I would much rather watch "Princess Mononoke" again, at least that had intelligent antagonists with a darn good reason with what they're doing and a much more gripping storyline. The storyline of Avatar felt way to forced and made you ask yourself, "why?" 2/5 (poor)
